Hilary Duff’s “Not Stressed” About Losing Baby Weight!

hil1_wide.jpg
Unlike most Hollywood moms who start dieting the second their baby pops out, Hilary Duff is taking a more realistic approach. “I try to eat organic, but I?m not a total freak about it,” the new mom to 2-month-old Luca told In Touch at a recent Johnson & Johnson event in LA. “I eat a lot of protein and a lot of fruits and vegetables.”

However, Hilary and her husband, Mike Comrie, aren’t willing to give up indulging entirely, either. “When we go out to restaurants, we want to order naughty food and enjoy it,” Hilary, 24, revealed.

But as far as exercise, she is seriously working up a sweat doing a mix of SoulCycle, Pilates and circuit training with her fitness guru, Harley Pasternak. “I?m not stressing about it. I?m working out hard, but I know I?m not going to see results until I?m eating really good,” she explains.

Donald Cerrone hoping to win UFC on Fuel 3 bonus for a pontoon boat

Donald Cerrone is used to walking away from fights with fight night bonuses. Stretching back to his days in the WEC, “Cowboy” has picked up nine Fight of the Night, Submission of the Night, or Knockout of the Night bonuses.

For tonight’s UFC on Fuel 3 fight against Jeremy Stephens, it’s not surprising that Cerrone already has plans for the next bonus he will try to win.

“You name it, the post-fight bonuses, I’m going for it,” Cerrone declared through his informal drawl. “I’ve got [expletive] to buy. I’m thinking (of getting) 10 or 12 girls to come out on a pontoon boat.”

Since he has picked up so many bonus checks, perhaps the UFC needs to think of different ways to motivate Cerrone. Much as Lincoln Hawk arm-wrestled for a new tractor/trailer in “Over the Top,” Cerrone could fight for a boat, or a new horse for his ranch, or a lifetime supply of cowboy hats. It’s not too much to ask for.

Bernie Ecclestone – No plans to put the brakes on

© Getty Images

In an exclusive interview with the Guardian as his 80th birthday approaches, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone speak out about a variety of subjects, from the future of the sport to Margaret Thatcher, Hitler, Saddam Hussein, democracy, football and what continues to drive him.

The way I feel at the moment, why stop? I do it because I enjoy it. And yesterday is gone. I don’t care what happened yesterday. What else would I do? People retire to die. I don’t get any individual pleasure because we don’t win races or titles in this job. I’m like most business people. You look back at the end of the year and you see what you’ve achieved by working out how much money the company has made. That’s it.

Usher performed on the "TODAY Show" this morning as a part of their 2012 Summer Concert Series. See the performance inside and a clip of Iggy Azalea discussing her "strap on" skills during a twerk contest at her S.O.B.’s concert.

Usher kicked off the TODAY Show’s 2012 Summer Concert Series today at 30 Rock in NYC. Dressed in a t-shirt and jeans with a green jacket, he wowed the audience with 8 backup dancers as he performed "OMG", "Climax" And "Without You."

When asked about his Looking 4 Myself album (June 12), he said it was the result of a 3-year journey where he adopted the mantra "Evolve Don’t Evaporate."

When Matt Lauer asked him what he is evolving into, he said he is still trying to figure it out.

And at the end of the interview, he gave an adorable shout out to his sons and said it’s great raising them.

Will Smith Shoves Mouthy Reporter in Moscow

He didn’t drop any condoms on the red carpet, but Will Smith experienced his own unusual situation during a movie premiere press line this week.

The actor was in Moscow on behalf of Men in Black III when a reporter from the Ukraine embraced the star with a hug… and then tried to follow that up with a kiss on the lips.

“He’s lucky I didn’t sucker punch him,” Smith is heard telling someone else soon afterward, though he responds very well from the saliva-based attack and is quickly seen below laughing about it.

It’s hard to blame Smith for his initial, surprised reaction, though, isn’t it? Watch it all unfold now:

Will Smith had to "Get Philly" on a Ukrainian reporter who tried to get kissy with him on the red carpet. Watch Big Willy put the smack down inside…

While walking the red carpet in Moscow for the debut of Men in Black 3, a reporter from the Ukraine (who’s known for kissing celebs) found out the hard way that Will Smith isn’t one to catch off guard.

Will happily greeted the reporter at first….but after the "sneak" kiss, Will pushed him away and gave him a quick smack to the face. After the smack, Will said, "He’s lucky I didn’t sucker punch him."

Watch it all go down here:

Supposedly this reporter does this with many celebs…but Will wasn’t having that ish.  His girl doesn’t play that.  And if one of y’all ask if I’m talking about Duane Martin..you know you’re wrong…

Chris Lytle comes up short in senate bid

UFC veteran Chris Lytle lost his bid to win the Republican state Senate nomination in Indiana on Tuesday. He came in second with 30 percent of the vote behind Mike Crider who had 41 percent. After the results came in, he made a concession tweet.

Almost. I finished 2nd. It was a good fight.

Lytle’s last MMA bout was a win over Dan Hardy in August. He announced his retirement just before the bout, then won by a submission. His campaign started less than a month after the bout.

His campaign drew support from the MMA community, as fighters Matt Mitrione, Chael Sonnen and Patrick Cote encouraged the Lytle’s district to get out and vote for him. Both fighters and fight fans liked Lytle because of his style in the cage. He earned a record of 31-18-5 and picked up $515,000 in fight night bonuses during his 12-year fight career.

Chin up, Chris. Be comforted by the fact that you can knock out anyone who didn’t vote for you.

Facebook IPO Day: The Scene At NASDAQ in NYC?s Times Square [TCTV]

Screen Shot 2012-05-18 at 2.55.30 PMIn case there was any confusion after Facebook’s eight years in business and its recent geographic expansions, it was cleared up today: Facebook’s home and heart lies in Silicon Valley. TechCrunch TV saw that first-hand this morning at NASDAQ’s Marketsite in New York City’s Times Square. We were on hand there for the ringing of the NASDAQ opening bell, but as expected, Facebook’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg took advantage of the option to ring it remotely from his company’s Menlo Park, California headquarters.

datasift_suitcaseFacebook’s IPO was obviously the single most discussed topic on Twitter today. The good folks over at social media data platform DataSift monitored what Twitter users were saying about the IPO throughout the day and came up with some interesting conclusions. Turns out, the ups and down of how Twitter’s users felt about the stock pretty much mirrored the price of Facebook’s stock as the day progressed.

David Kirkpatrick On What The ?Facebook Effect? Could Be Post-IPO [TCTV]

Screen Shot 2012-05-18 at 6.23.52 PMMark Zuckerberg’s remote ringing of the opening bell and Facebook’s initial stock trades were a bit anti-climactic in person at the NASDAQ Marketsite in New York City, as we’ve written — NASDAQ is a digital exchange after all, so there’s not too much to see visually. Five ways to improve F1

Emerson Fittipaldi in his heyday © Sutton Images

In an interview in the Times, former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi?s outlined his five-point plan to enhance Formula One. Cut costs ?They spend a fortune in wind-tunnel testing alone. Reduce costs and the slowest teams would catch up and make it more even.? Limit downforce ?They need to reduce enormously the downforce in the cars, the only way to bring back overtaking. We need more mechanical grip so that you have longer braking areas, can set up the car coming out of a corner, get in the slipstream and then overtake.? Close the pitlane ?When the safety car goes out they should close the pitlane. Now it?s just a lottery.? Lift ban on team orders ?It is a very stupid rule. It?s why they are called teams, it?s why they have two cars. If a driver is leading in the championship, everything has to go in his favour. What is wrong with that? It?s so easy for teams to camouflage their orders anyway. All they need to do is tell one guy on the radio he has a problem with his brakes. They can bend the rules very easily. In the old days they would even swap cars, so why do we have this ban now?? Retain traditional grands prix ?These places are the soul of racing. The Americas are under-represented. We have Canada back, but there is no USA, no Argentina, no Mexico. We need to stay in the heartlands.?

Junior dos Santos shares his thoughts on Frank Mir, why he sings, Chael Sonnen and more

UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos stopped by on Thursday to answer your questions. He shared his thoughts on his UFC 146 opponent Frank Mir, Jon Jones, music, Chael Sonnen, and much more.

On where Mir is most dangerous, but not the most dangerous in the UFC:

His biggest threat is if he can use his jiu-jitsu to take me to me to the ground. That’s his big strength. I think he’s good. Maybe among the best ground games in the heavyweight division, but there are plenty others in the other division that are better.

On Mir’s trash talk:

I don’t really like that style. When you prefer talk rather than fighting, it’s not good. I’d rather let my fighting do the talking.

On Saturday’s Strikeforce grand prix fighter Josh Barnett:

He’s very experienced and has a great ground game. As far as whether I want to fight him, it’s not up to me. If the UFC wants to make Josh Barnett my next opponent, then so be it. I think the fight with Daniel Cormier is an exciting matchup and I’m looking forward to it.

On the possibility of fighting UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones:

No, I don’t think so. Jon Jones is a cool guy. Extremely talented. If one day he wants to fight as a heavyweight, then I’m sure he’d have a fight or two before he gets a shot at the title.

Mir’s last win was against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, a good friend of dos Santos. Will that play into this fight psychologically?

I’m a positive person and a confident fighter. What happened between them is just part of the sport. It’s just a natural part of our sport. In my opinion, Big Nog was winning that fight and just made a mistake. Frank Mir took advantage of that as good fighter would do. It won’t impact what I do.

On sticking with “Gonna Fly Now,” a.k.a. the Rocky song, as his walkout song:

For sure I’ll be walking out to the rocky song. It motivates me a lot so I agree with Christian. Back story: Dana White didn’t want me to come out to that song and said it’s overused. I told him ‘Man, my hands shake when I hear that song’. When he heard how powerful it was for me, he told me I could keep it as my walkout song.

On what he thinks of Mir’s chin:

Everybody’s chin is their weak spot. If you land a shot on somebody’s chin, they’re down. Fight over. So yeah, that’s where I’m going to try to hit him. And that’s where I’m going to be hitting him.

On his love of singing:

I don’t need karaoke. I sing a cappella. I like singing. I sing in the shower and all the time. When we’re happy people, music’s just part of our day.

On his prediction for Silva/Sonnen II:

I’ve got to take Anderson. Sonnen-Silva I, Sonnen was caught taking performance-enhancers and Anderson had broken ribs. It wasn’t a fair fight. This time he’ll beat him easily.

UFC on Fox 3 will answer these five questions

UFC returns to network television for the third time on Saturday with four bouts on Fox and six on Fuel TV. What questions will be answered when the fights are over?

1. Is Johny Hendricks ready for the big time? Since losing to Rick Story in 2010, Hendricks has been on a tear. He won three straight fights, including a 12-second knockout of Jon Fitch. His last test before being promised a title shot is Josh Koscheck, a one-time welterweight contender who has equally impressive wrestling credentials.

2. Does Nate Diaz deserve a title shot? UFC president Dana White says with a win over Jim Miller, yes. Diaz won his last two fights, but lost the two before that. The lightweight belt is being contested in August and Anthony Pettis is waiting in the wings. Even with a win, Diaz may have some time on his hands before fighting for UFC gold.

3. Is Josh Koscheck over the hill? Koscheck is 34. Hendricks is 28. That age difference means it’s easy to look at the fight as old fogie vs. young buck, but Koscheck took offense, calling any media who pointed out the gap between their ages “retards.” If he wants to prove he’s not an old man, he needs to give a better showing in the cage against Hendricks than he did against Mike Pierce in February, when he barely won a split decision.

4. Will Pat Barry vs. Lavar Johnson last more than a minute? This bout kicks off the month of the heavyweight, and it promises to be the perfect way to start a May that will feature the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix finals and UFC 146′s all heavyweight main card. Barry and Johnson have 20 knockout wins between them. Chances are that number will be 21 by the time the bout is over.

5. How do the latest crop of “The Ultimate Fighter” products stand up? The preliminary card, airing on Fuel TV and Fox Deportes, is full of TUF castmembers from the past few seasons. John Dodson, Louis Gaudinot and Dennis Bermudez are getting their first shots at fights outside of the TUF finale, and this is their chance to show they’re more than just good TV.

ERRAND GIRLS: Halle & Nahla Rack Up At CVS–Until Nahla Spots The Paps!

Mama Bear Halle Berry hit up a CVS drugstore in West Hollywood yesterday with daughter Nahla.  Peep the mommy-and-me pics, until Nahla rightfully snitches on the paps…

Even big Hollywood stars need to grab snacks, meds & feminine products from the local drugstore every now and then.  So it’s no surprise the down tot earth mom Halle Berry was spotted at a CVS in West Hollywood yesterday grabbing some necessities with her too cute 4-year-old Nahla:

Halle rocked her engagement ring from Olivier Martinez as well.

And then Nahla spotted those pesky cameras and started to cry…and y’all now Halle doesn’t play that ish.

Speaking of Halle popping off on the paps, she recently chatted with EXTRA about THESE PICS which surfaced last week of her screaming match with a snapper outside of Nahla’s school.  She told host Mario Lopez:

“I hate that I lost my cool, but you know, I’m human. That happens and when it comes to my daughter, I’m ferocious!”

And we don’t blame her!  Check out her full chat below:

?King Mo? Lawal signs one-of-a-kind deal with TNA wrestling and Bellator (VIDEO)

After being released by Strikeforce, former light heavyweight champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal has signed with both TNA professional wrestling and Bellator. Both groups have a partnership with Spike, making this deal possible.

“This deal is a dream come true for me,” Lawal said. “Bjorn [Rebney, Bellator CEO] and Dixie [Carter, TNA president] have given me the opportunity to engage in my two great loves, mixed martial arts and professional wrestling, at the same time.  And, to have it all on Spike TV is really Buttercream icing on a big ole cake ? not that whipped cream stuff either!”

He will begin appearing with TNA Impact this summer. When Bellator moves from MTV2 to Spike in 2013, Lawal will return to mixed martial arts.

It’s a perfect fit for Lawal, who has world-class amateur wrestling credentials and enough showmanship to fit in well among the pro wrestling world. His fight entrances often used props and dancers, and he wore a crown and a cape to the cage. Lawal also showed off his pro wrestling chops with Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier in November of 2009.

This contract is a bright spot for what had been a turbulent 2012 for Lawal. He contracted a life-threatening staph infection after knee surgery. His victory over Lorenz Larkin was overturned by the Nevada Athletic Commission for a positive drug test, and he was suspended from MMA for nine months. After the hearing to appeal his suspension, Lawal called a commissioner a racist [expletive], and was cut from Strikeforce. Though he apologized personally to the commissioner, he was still not invited back to the Zuffa-owned promotion.

He doesn’t see a scenario where he will return to Zuffa through Strikeforce or the UFC:

“I’m not going to wait for nobody. If somebody comes to me with something that is good and a great deal, I’m going to take the best deal. And right now, the Bellator deal is the best deal you can possibly get. With Bellator and Impact Wrestling, that’s the best deal you can possibly get, and I took it.”

How will “King Mo” do as a pro wrestler and fighter? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

John Travolta Lawsuit Dropped By Second Masseur

Just two days after John Travolta’s first accuser filed papers to dismiss his sexual battery lawsuit against the actor, the second accuser has followed suit.

The second accuser, also a male masseur, just fired his lawyer and will reportedly file new papers in an effort to dismiss the lawsuit in the near future.

The second accuser had claimed Travolta assaulted him on January 28 at an Atlanta spa resort. Travolta allegedly grabbed the masseur’s penis, etc.

John Travolta Photograph

It’s the last remaining lawsuit against Travolta, as both the third accuser (Fabian Zanzi) and the fourth accuser who came forward today have not filed.

The first accuser, who had claimed a similar junk-grabbing incident occurred on January 16 at the Beverly Hills Hotel, dropped his lawsuit on Tuesday.

Attorney Okorie Okorocha, who repped both accusers, claims he doesn’t know why his second client called it quits, but both have hired Gloria Allred.

John Travolta is quick to deny reports that he paid off the men.

His lawyer, Marty Singer, says, “Not one penny has been paid nor do we have any intention to pay any money for these ridiculous and false claims.”

Campaign launched to save Team Lotus

© Save Team Lotus

One side of the Lotus naming dispute has been put forward on a new and in-depth webpage called www.saveteamlotus.com. The basic background is that the Lotus Racing F1 team had its naming rights revoked for next season by Group Lotus and, in order to keep racing under the Lotus name, bought the Team Lotus brand off David Hunt, who had owned it since the original team?s last race in 1994. Group Lotus has now taken Lotus Racing to court to try and stop it using the historic name in Formula One next year. The issue has been a source of constant confusion for many fans and the new webpage offers a breakdown of David Hunt?s and Team Lotus? side of the argument.

Alistair Overeem, Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva?s move to Vegas and Dan Henderson fill Reader Rants

In a very busy week, despite the lack of fights this weekend, you all had plenty to talk about. Reader Rants covered Alistair Overeem’s suspension, Anheuser-Busch’s strong words towards the UFC, the Chael Sonnen/Anderson Silva move to Las Vegas, and how Dan Henderson will fare against Jon Jones. Do you want to see your thoughts in Reader Rants? Like Cagewriter on Facebook and comment on the stories that show up in your newsfeed.

Not many of you bought Alistair Overeem’s explanation for his elevated testosterone levels.

I want to believe Overeem, but where there is smoke, there is fire. The tests prior to the Lesnar fight had weird circumstances and now this? For a guy who proclaims innocence and knows the PED spotlight is squarely on his back, he should be the first to check the ingredients of anything he puts in his body. — Ryan Wahl

I don’t know science well enough, but he keeps on making excuses and doesn’t really convince anyone that he’s clean. Sure, he says everything with a straight face, but like Ryan said, where there’s smoke, there’s fire! — Brandon Mendoza

Anheuser-Busch shared their displeasure with the UFC over the behavior of some fighters. One reader thought they should take a look inward.

I think it would be unfair if they let a few bad apples spoil the bunch. We’re in such a sensitive age with the internet and social media, but UFC fighters aren’t running around disparaging women, minorities or disabled people, they are making errant jokes like Anheuser-Busch does all the time. It’s really too bad if a beer company with controversial commercials of it’s own can’t learn to turn the other cheek and just ask the UFC to introduce fines and consistency into it’s policies about social media instead of threatening to pull their sponsorship. Talk about calling the kettle black. — Joshua Smith

Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva’s rematch was moved to Las Vegas, and Silva isn’t the only one disappointed in the move.

I’m disappointed, everyone has wanted to see how the fight is gonna go down on Anderson’s home turf and this just helps Chael. It’s still a good fight and if the card lives up to the hype it’ll probably go down as the card of the year. — Gabriel Martinez

Brazil fans are going to be disappointed in the UFC. This would’ve been the match they wanted out of any, and its been taken away from them. — Manny Seda

Cagereaders had many answers for the question, how will Dan Henderson do against Jon Jones?

Hendo has NO advantages to use against Jones apart from experience. Height, reach, youth, strength, stamina, and the match all go to Jones. — Donald Windley

Hendo will have to end it early, and he can do it! If Jones somehow manages to survive the 1st round (run instead of engage) and make it past half way into the second I think that the younger guy’s ground game will be the difference. Too bad that, I say! Every MMA fan loves to see a knock out! Hendo deserves to go out a champ and Jones doesn’t have the ‘cred’. — Kevin Astle

Pat Barry takes out Christian Morecraft in the Knockout of the Week (VIDEO)

Will he find the same magic against Lavar Johnson this Saturday at UFC on Fox 3? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Five UFC belts up for grabs this summer

Over the weekend, two more UFC championship bouts were finalized for the summer, and it’s clear that the UFC wants to keep those championship belts moving. Every belt, except for the welterweight belt that is in limbo because of Georges St-Pierre’s injured knee and the just-contested light heavyweight belt, will be on the line between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

– Bantamweight: Champion Dominick Cruz will rematch Urijah Faber at UFC 148 on July 7 in Las Vegas

– Featherweight: Champion Jose Aldo will fight Erik Koch at UFC 149 on July 21 in Calgary

– Lightweight: Champion Benson Henderson will rematch with Frankie Edgar at UFC 150 on Aug. 11 in Denver

– Middleweight: Champion Anderson Silva will rematch with Chael Sonnen at UFC 148, which is the most stacked UFC event since UFC 129 last April.

– Heavyweight: Champion Junior dos Santos will fight Frank Mir at UFC 146 on May 26 in Las Vegas.

Throw in a free on Fox show, a Fuel and an FX show and UFC 147 with Wanderlei Silva fighting Vitor Belfort, it’s going to be a … wait for it … hot summer of MMA. Which belt is most likely to have a new owner by Labor Day? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Russell Brand on Katy Perry: Nothing But Love!

Russell Brand and Katy Perry might as well be teaching Celebrity Breakups 101.

Proving that a split doesn’t have to be bitter or contentious just because it’s painful, the comedian opened up to Ellen DeGeneres about his recent divorce and had only positive things to say about former wife Katy Perry.

“I still love her as a human being,” he said. “But, sometimes when you’re in a relationship I suppose it doesn’t work out, does it? You can’t absolutely make everything the way you want it to be in life. But that doesn’t mean I regret it or anything.”

“Sometimes things are just different and then you move with that and try and remain in contact with what is beautiful about yourself and each other.”

“I was very happy to be married with her,” Brand continued. “She’s such a beautiful human being and I just have only love and positivity for her.”

Perry has since rebounded with Florence + The Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd, with whom she was spotted packing on the PDA at Coachella.

Still, it’s time to move on. Last week, Brand finally unfollowed her on Twitter.

Also on Ellen, Brand weighed in on various newsworthy items of the day, including the Time Magazine breastfeeding cover. You gotta watch.

Kim Kardashian Shunned By Hollywood

clip_image001.jpg The fame Kim Kardashian has worked so hard to achieve is slipping away and even boyfriend Kanye West can?t help the reality star! Banned from the swanky annual Metropolitan Museum of Art?s Costume Institute Gala by the host herself, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Kim was forced to stay home poring over pictures of the event?s A-list guests.

Now, In Touch has learned that Kanye went as far as to ask renowned designer Tory Burch, who dressed him for the exclusive gala, for help. ?He asked Tory if Kim could accompany him as his date,? a fashion insider tells In Touch. ?There was nothing Tory could do against Anna?s wishes, but if Kanye had requested to invite a well-liked celebrity, it surely wouldn?t have been an issue.?

?She was so upset that he went to the Met event without her,? an insider shares of the star.

After Kim?s quickie divorce filing, her onetime friends began abandoning her in droves, with former pals like Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Eva Longoria keeping their distance. Kim?s splashy TV wedding ?didn?t sit well? with Gwyneth Paltrow either. ?She?d die if she were photographed next to Kim,? a pal tells In Touch. ?She hates what she stands for.?

Sadly, Kim is far from well-liked these days. ?She?s always wanted to surround herself with famous people, but they don?t want anything to do with her anymore,? confides a source close to the 31-year-old.

53-year-old knocks out opponent half his age

Let’s hear it for the old guys! 53-year-old Tim Karaker showed up at Fire Extreme in Bourbonnais, Ill. last week and was asked to fight. He said yes, and knocked out 21-year-old Brandon Frey. Watch his MMA debut here, and skip to the 2:30 mark for the KO. UFC fighter Stephan Bonnar narrates and lets a few NSFW words slip.

Apparently, the medical personnel who is supposed to be at that fight were out for a walk, because they weren’t too quick in responding to Frey on the ground. Nonetheless, congratulations to Karaker. You’re now the hero of Bonnar as well as every man over the age of 50 who wanted to throw some leather at a youngun but couldn’t actually get in a cage with him.

UFC VP says Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey helped bolster MMA?s hopes in New York

If, as it should be, mixed martial arts is ever legalized in New York, don’t forget to give Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey her share of credit.

On April 18 in Albany, N.Y., the New York state Senate voted 43-14 to approve a bill that would legalize and regulate MMA in the state. It still needs to pass the Assembly and then be signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in order to become law.

The bill has passed the state Senate before, but this time around, said Marc Ratner, the UFC’s vice president for governmental and regulatory affairs, the job was made much easier with Rousey’s testimony.

“She got up there and she really made a great presentation and I think she had a significant impact,” Ratner said. “We [as executives] can talk all we want to them about the positives of MMA, but to hear it from someone like her, a fighter, someone who is very articulate [and] who made her points very passionately, it definitely made a huge impact.”

Rousey, who defeated Miesha Tate by, what else, an arm bar submission to win the title on March 3 in Columbus, was particularly effective when she spoke about what MMA has done for her. She won a bronze medal in judo in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, but said she would be struggling financially had she remained in that sport. She said she’d be losing money if she were a professional judoka.

Several senators approached her, she said, and told her her presentation changed their minds and caused them to vote in favor of the bill.

“MMA has a bad rap among some people,” Rousey told Cagewriter. “It’s marketed sometimes in a way that is not what the sport is. You hear the marketing, ‘Two men enter. One man leaves,’ but that’s ridiculous. It’s not what this sport is. They just do it to sound dramatic. It’s like a movie preview. The whole movie isn’t just running around and screaming and explosions, but they make it seem like that [in the trailer] so people go to the movie. There’s a lot of quiet time and dialogue and there is a plot. What they’re doing is like they’re comparing a commercial for ‘The Bourne Identity’ to actually sitting there and watching it for two hours.”

She spent time explaining the nuances of her specialty, the arm bar. She pointed out that she’d been arm barred “more times than I can count,” and pointed out that she wasn’t out snapping bones. She said she doesn’t think she’s ever broken an opponent’s arm.

That, too, worked.

“I explained everything behind it and after I did, they were like, ‘OK, that’s no problem, it’s not barbaric,’” Rousey said.

Her best point, though, may have been when she told the senators that there was actually already MMA going on in the state. She made them aware that there is a robust amateur scene there, but it isn’t as safe for the fighters and the fighters aren’t able to make a living, like they do when they’re professionals and compete where the sport is regulated.

That point struck home with many of the lawmakers.

“In New York, you could fight and have people do MMA,” she said. “But they have to do it without the proper medical checks. They have to do it without getting paid. They have to do it without any kind of regulation or oversight. [Amateur MMA in New York] is unsafe the way it is now, because they’re missing all the things we have in pro MMA.

“We’re not asking them to bring in a bunch of people and tell them to kill each other. That’s not what’s going on. That’s how it was being presented. I wanted to point out that amateur MMA is here already, but we want to get it regulated so it’s safe and there is regulation and it is safe and everyone gets paid for what they do. I want to be able to work in any state in my own country. Can you imagine, we’re in 2012 and I still legally can’t do my job anywhere I want in my country?”

The tens of millions of dollars poured into the legalization effort by UFC owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta and president Dana White will be primarily responsible for MMA’s passage in New York, if and when it occurs.

But Rousey’s day on the hill shouldn’t be forgotten. On that day, the lady was a champ when it came to wooing the legislators.

Doctors use Formula One pit crews as safety model

American Medical News reports hospitals in at least a dozen countries are learning how to translate the split-second timing and near-perfect synchronisation of Formula One pit crews to the high-risk handoffs of patients from surgery to recovery and intensive care.

“In Formula One, they have checklists, databases, and they have well-defined processes for doing things, and we don’t really have any of those things in health care.”
